A few months ago my wife and I sat down at our kitchen table and decided to get rid of our timeshare. It sounded like a good idea when we got it, but things have changed now. We have had to cut back(to say the least). And on top of that, we don’t use the timeshare much – not enough to justify keeping it. Which is why it was time to get rid of it.
At the time, I thought that our decision to get rid of the timeshare was the hard part. What I didn’t realize was how difficult the next part really is – getting rid of the dang thing.
I started by calling the resort and I asked a lot of questions about selling. They weren’t much help. I guess that is because they are really only interested in taking your money when you first buy. So this avenue was a dead end.
Next, I called up an old friend who owned a timeshare. We talked for a few hours about our college days, but he wasn’t much help. Apparently, he and his wife got a divorce and she uses regularly now. So although it was good to get in touch with an old friend… this was another dead end.
And then my search took me to the Internet. You can ask my wife and she will tell you that I’m as stubborn as an old mule. But with the help of my little computer whiz grandson, I was able to get all the information I needed. After a few hours, I had a good grasp on my options. But I still wasn’t sure if I wanted to donate or sell.
The next morning, I was pretty sure that I was going to donate the timeshare. My wife and I had talked it over during dinner and it sounded like a good idea.
So I sat down, pulled out the number to the company I planned on donating to, and gave them a ring…
Luckily for me, they didn’t answer.
I ate lunch right after that and decided to give something else a try (and I'm glad I did). When I was done with lunch, I walked over to the computer and pulled up a website called www.howtoselltimeshare.org. I had visited this site a few days ago, but I had never requested the evaluation of my timeshare. But what the heck, I was ready to donate my timeshare without even knowing what it is worth. An hour or so after requesting the evaluation, I received a call from that company. The man on the phone was very friendly and he gave me a lot of good information. I ended the call and talked with my wife. We decided not to donate our timeshare, but instead to go a different route. The company that runs www.howtoselltimeshare.org actually gave us a good deal of support and helped us get rid of our timeshare in a reasonable time frame.
If you’re thinking about donating, I recommend that you get that evaluation like I did. I was about to give up and donate because it looked like the best option. Thankfully, I had enough sense to get a little more information and help before following through.
Thank you for sharing that website. I am in a similar situation and have to get rid of my timeshare. Hopefully that company works out for me too!
